How to remove write protection from USB drive

How to remove write protection from a write protected USB flash drive:

Six days ago, My Kingston USB Flash Drive got Write Protected, And I couldnt write files to it, nor could I delete any files, nor could I format my USB drive.
I spent hours and hours searching on google for a solution, then on a forum, I finnally found a guide that worked for me :D (Hurray !)
Well, this guide includes edits in windows registry, but its very easy.
Here is the guide :

  • Start Menu -> Run -> type ‘regedit’ (without the quotes) -> Hit Enter !
  • Now take a backup of your registry, incase something goes wrong:
Right Click on ‘My Computer’ -> ‘Export’ > save it on the Desktop.
  • Now Browse through these tabs:
    My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
  • Double click on the string ‘WriteProtect’ and change the ‘Value Data’ box to ‘0’
  • On Toolbar, Click on File -> Export -> Save it anywhere with any name like ‘WriteProtection01.reg’ or anything.
  • You need to repeat the step 3 - step 5 with every string on folder named ‘ControlSet***’ (* = any Digit, i.e. 001, 002) - that is, instead of currentcontrolset, repeat the steps for folders controlset***
    For Example :
    My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
    - Again export it on same directory as before, named as ‘WriteProtection0**.reg’

Note : These exports are just incase you need to revert the changes in your registry, to revert, just double click on the *.reg file, and click yes when it prompts.

This method worked for me, post your results in your comments, or if you know another alternative to this method, dont forget to share it with us.

this is too complicated..one thing you could try is to find a little switch on the side of you USB and try to slide it the opposite direction to unlock. This worked for me. good luck.

Hey i figured out that if you have XP (not XP S2 or w/e its called) you cant find storagedevicepolicies.

I went to this site and found the answer. For those of you who dont know spanish, ill translate. :D

    Basically go to here:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor

on there you should see “Start”

right click it and click on Modify

    change the 3 to a 0.

    :D

    that should work.

    good luck!

This problem kept happening repeatedly in my Comp. This forum had the answer. Successfully removed Write protection. Hope it doesnt repeat.

The reasons for this problem could be many. I found two.
    1) Virus changes this setting in the registry. It removes write protection only when it wants to write to the USb. Antivirus removes this, but keeps doesnt change back the setting.
2)McFee Antivirus for example sometimes write protects the USB while scanning. When u remove the USB while scanning is on or due to some other trouble, it fails to remove write protection. Such AVs are a pain in the neck.

the problem can be sorted out easily . the procedure explained above is quite a complicated one….just c if there is a button or lock on the side of ur flash drive…if it is there then move it in the opposite direction…im sure it will work coz it worked for me.

salam (hi) everyone,I realized something that might be useful. in the case you go to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
but there is no “WriteProtect” string in folder “StorageDevicePolicies”, you should create it this way:
right click on “StorageDevicePolicies” and select “New”, then select “DWORD (32-bit) value” and rename the new string to “WriteProtect” (without the quotes), do not change the value data and let it be ‘0′.
Now do the same for every string on folder named ‘ControlSet***’ (* = any Digit, i.e. 001, 002) - that is, instead of “CurrentControlSet”. (Create the same string in these folders).
now remove your Flash and connect it to PC again for changes to take effect.

    Have fun :)
